IS-wa script (v2.01)

Introduction

IS-wa script is a java script built for Mac OS X, Adobe Indesign CS3 and Adobe Photoshop CS3. It resizes all images to their actual size in a publication and user defined resolution.

If you're publishing a book or a magazine, image resolution is one of the factors that effects quality of final print. If picture resolution is too low it will look blurry or fuzzy on final print. If picture resolutions is too high, the file size becomes unnecessarily large. It takes a longer time to process and uses more resources of output system, while you will see no benefit on printed product. With IS-wa script you can easily prepare your files for printing, automatically optimize sizes and resolution of all images.

There is another reason for optimizing image size and resolution. Most images will look better on print if you apply Unsharp Mask filter. But to get the best result, image should be sized to its actual size and appropriate resolution before applying Unsharp Mask filter. Otherwise if image is scaled down in the publication, it will be resampled during output and small details will lose their sharpness.

The common rule for conventional print is as follows:

Image Resolution = Line Screen x 2

At the same time image size should be equal to its actual size in the publication. This is what IS-aw script was built for.

Requirements.

Mac OS X 10.4 or higher,
InDesign CS3 (version 5),
Photoshop CS3 (version 10).

Installation.

Create a folder in the InDesign Scripts folder, for example /Adobe InDesign CS3/Scripts/Scripts Panel/IS-wa. Unzip ISinstall.zip into that folder. You will see two files, IS-wa.jsxbin and IS-install.app. The first one is the actual script for resampling, and the second is its activator. Run IS-install.app which activates the script for trial period of 30 days. If the script was activated successfully you will see a message "IS-wa script has been activated successfully". After the activation you can use IS-wa.jsxbin for 30 days.

Usage.

Open a document in InDesign. Start Photoshop. Open InDesign Scripts palette by clicking on menu Windows/Automation/Scripts. Find IS-wa.jsxbin and double click on it. A dialog window opens, where you can choose what document you want to process and what resolution to resample to.

The script work consists of two steps. On the first step IS-wa analyzes the document. You will see a progress bar showing the process of analysis. On the second step Photoshop will be lunched and images will be processed in Photoshop. Image processing is reflected on a progress bar as well. A confirmation message will tell you that the script has finished its work.

The scripts creates two text files in the same folder in which it was installed. Two of them are just log files and will not be interesting for most users. The third file dups.txt is created when the same image is used two or more times in the same document. In this case the image is resampled to the biggest size in the publication and dups.txt will indicate on which other pages it was used.

Attention: This script overwrites image files. If you want to keep original files intact, make a backup copy before running the script.
